Activity: Peer-group coaching (the intervision method)

Frequency:
12 times per year, February-June/July and September-February

What is peer-group coaching?
Peer-group coaching are group sessions using the intervision method. It’s a professional conversation between people who work in the same field or do similar work (in this case PhD students). The subject of the sessions is the work performed and the related (personal) challenges that come along. The method of intervision provides the opportunity to use each other’s vision, experiences and ideas in order to find new ways of addressing issues in your work context. The aim is to increase the expertise of those involved, improve the quality of the work, and to stimulate personal development.

When?
Peer-group coaching is useful for PhD students at all stages of their trajectory. There will be 6 sessions (every 4 weeks). The sessions consists of a fixed group of 6-7 participants with a trained expert in the intervision method.

Subjects
The subject of the sessions will be determined by the group. Each meeting starts with an inventory about who has something to discuss (a question, a dilemma, everything is possible) and it is jointly decided which case will be further explored. Topics can for example range from: things are not going well in my supervising team; I do not receive feedback on time; I have lost motivation for work, or any other work related situation you are struggling with.

PhD-students of previous intervision rounds, highly recommend peer-group coaching for other PhD students.

“It was very helpful to talk to other PhD's about struggles and to experience that most people have similar issues. I felt supported, and it helped to normalize my struggles.”

“The perspective of other PhD students on the case I was struggling with in my supervising team really helped me to get into action, and to change the situation I was in.”

“It brought me a sense of belongingness, because I realize some issues that I am facing are common issues among the others as well.”

NB. this is not a course. It will be registered within Hora Finita as an activity.
This activity belongs to the competence Personal Effectiveness.
