Course: Publishing in English

Introduction

This course covers all aspects of writing biomedical and technical publications in English.

Content

The course will examine the various conventions of biomedical/technical writing, including layout of a paper, organization of each section, and vocabulary. Attention will be given to construction of paragraphs and style expectations in sentence structure and linkage. Particular points of grammar and spelling will be covered according to the needs of the students.

The central focus of the course will be to work on your own writing project, such as a research publication, review, or thesis. During the course, students will be asked to submit several pieces of text from this project, each about 750 words. Detailed, individual comments will be given on this text. A course manual will be provided, and extensive supplementary materials and exercises are available on Nestor.

Participants should set aside at least 3 hours per week for homework. The lecturer will use these texts to illustrate common mistakes.

Note:

This course is ideal for students who do not yet have extensive experience in publishing in English, but who are just beginning to write a paper. The recommended level of proficiency in writing in English is CEFR C1.
