Course description

At some point in your career as a PhD student, you will be expected to publish your research in scientific journals, and this will have to be done in a clear, concise and reader-friendly manner. This short course will introduce you to writing coherent, cohesive and well-structured academic texts. Participants of this course are expected to have a sufficient level of English Proficiency (B2/C1 level).

Workshop 1: Introduction to paragraphs and sentence functions, including topic sentences.

  • What is a paragraph? Why do we use them? How long should they be?
  • How are they organized? Do sentences have particular functions in paragraphs? What are they?
  • What is a topic sentence?
  • Paragraph levels
  • Using reporting verbs
  • Expressing the core of the message through sentence structure.

Workshop 2: Paragraph coherence

  • Creating a story line
  • Linking words, transitional phrases, transitional sentences
  • Types of evidence
  • Using repetition
  • Using parallel structures
  • Emphasis

Workshop 3: Types of paragraphs and how to organize them

  • Descriptive & process
  • Argumentative
