The Art of Scientific Storytelling: Sharing and selling your science

Course description

At the end of your PhD project, you will hopefully have a number of publications in peer-reviewed journals, and a thesis with a nice cover.
But who is going to read it from the first page to the last? Could you summarize your work for non-scientists, like family and friends? And are you able to show what you have done and what skills you have required to companies, or what you would like to investigate next to funding organisations?

In all these cases, you need some science communication skills. You need to be able to tell the story of your science. The short course ‘The Art of Scientific Storytelling’ will give you a brief introduction on how to translate your work into an interesting story. This skill will come in handy when you have to produce a popular summary of your thesis, but also when you are writing a grant proposal.

Dr. René Fransen has worked as a science journalist and general science writer for over 25 years, partly at the University of Groningen (Science LinX, FSE, www.rug.nl/sciencelinx/nieuws) and partly as a self-employed science writer and -editor (www.scidutch.nl).

In this short course, he will share with you how to plan and produce your science story, and how to avoid the most common pitfalls inwriting about your own research. You will be asked to hand in a short writing assignment before the course, and you will receive written feedback on this text.
