Participants are required to have a research project ready for the writing phase (e.g. analyzed dataset, completed model) before the start of the course. If you are writing a review or an introductory essay for your dissertation, you should register for Writing Class 1: Write an Introductory Essay.

Write a Scientific Article is set up to be most useful when participants write (and revise) the different sections of their articles soon after discussing the relevant theory and strategies in class. It aims to ease PhD candidates into the process of producing research articles for publication by instructing them on how to develop skills in the following:

1. Organizing their thoughts to produce clear lines of logical reasoning (i.e. clarity of thought)
2. Communicating these thoughts effectively through writing (i.e. clarity of writing).

As we work our way through the conventional structure of the scientific article, section by section, you will write your own original research article from start to finish.

To prepare for the course, you should have the following ready:

• A 250-word summary of your article in a “genre” style (e.g. romance, western, horror, science fiction, detective) to be presented at the first meeting as a fun and memorable way of introducing your project to fellow participants
• Two published articles from your own research field (original research articles rather than reviews, one well written and one poorly written) in PDF format; excerpts from these articles will be used as examples in the course
• Results from the writing, vocabulary and grammar tests available online through Dialang; please note that minimum English listening and writing levels of B2 are strongly advised for this course.

 This course consists of 10 sessions of 2.5 hours each.
