Mastering your PhD

Course description

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

! REVISION OF MASTERING YOUR PHD!

Please note that we are revising Mastering your PhD. Currently, starting PhDs will not be invited for a mentor group. This, of course, has no further consequences for your PhD programme. If you really feel the need for a mentor, please contact the PhD Academy coordinator (Melina Aarnikoivu, m.m.aarnikoivu@rug.nl).

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A PhD degree is about becoming a fully-fledged scientist and this means creative thinking, sound planning, (great) highs, (deep) lows, trouble shooting, working with your supervisor and other team members, being independent, and taking your research to timely completion. A lot of multitasking is involved and even the most able candidates have their ups and downs along the way.

The goal of Mastering your PhD is supporting and empowering you in taking ownership of your PhD project in a socially safe environ/ment, and minimizing the typical difficulties and challenges you might face throughout your PhD trajectory.

Mastering Your PhD is not a course which you can pass or fail, but a mentoring programme. You are assigned to a mentoring group with PhD candidates from all over the faculty who have started the same time you have. Your mentor is a member of staff of our faculty; (s)he is not an expert in your specific research field but an experienced scientist who will support you with the process of doing a PhD. The mentor has by definition no professional ties to your supervisors, nor will (s)he become involved in the supervision of your PhD project in any way. The mentor and mentor group stay together for the duration of the PhD project.

  • PhD candidates are invited by the GSSE. You cannot sign up for it.
  • All matters discussed are confidential. Nothing will be relayed back to your supervisors.
  • Successful completion earns you 2 ECTS.
