Teacher training for PhDs

Course description

As a PhD student carrying out teaching or supervision duties may be part of your job description, or you may voluntarily decide to teach a class. This course aims at preparing your for the task of teaching. Divided in two entwined parts, the course focuses on the (educational) theory and soft-skills needed to teach or supervise effectively.

The theoretical part will cover i.a.:

  • Alignment of learning objectives, instruction and assessment, and it’s importance (constructive alignment);
  • Interacting with students during different teaching settings (lectures, tutorials/seminars and practicals), group and individual supervision;
  • Providing feedback;
  • Intercultural competencies (IC).

Teaching and supervising are life-long learning activities for the teachers and supervisors. This course provides a starting block by means of peer-to-peer coaching. This activity helps you reflect on your own teaching or supervising activities and those of your peers. By discussing ‘in classroom’ situations, the aims is learn from each others successes or problems.

 

The course uses Google Classroom as it’s main means of communication.

 

Time frame and planning

 

The theoretical part is given biannually, during period 1a and 2a, and consists of three morning meetings and one daylong event. For each meetings, you be required to prepare or do an assignment. During the event a final product will have to be presented to the participants of the event.

Per semester six peer-to-peer sessions are organised for which you will have to sign up to three of them. For each of the session you attend, you will have to prepare or do an assignment. For this part, it is strongly recommended that you are teaching at the time of the peer-to-peer sessions.

Entry requirements and completion

 

To be able to start with this training it is required that you have English language skills at a sufficient level to present and carry out discussions with your peers. In order to effectively attend the peer-to-peer-coaching sessions, you will have to be assigned and participate in teaching duties.

In order to complete the course:

  • Attendance during all meetings of the theoretical part;
  • Attendance during three out of six peer-to-peer sessions;
  • Successful completion of all assignments..

The course rewards 2 ECTS

Theoretical part: 24 hours

Peer-to-peer coaching: 16 hours 

Course objectives

Aims

This course aims to provide teaching assistants with the basics in teaching and student supervision and to support them in their current teaching and supervising practices.

Learning objectives

After this course, the teaching assistants are able to:

  • Explain and discuss how their teaching or supervision practice relate(s) and contribute(s) to the learning objectives of the course, student project and programme in terms of constructive alignment;
  • Give effective and productive feedback to students, their peers and the course coordinator on student progress;
  • Prepare, implement and evaluate on a lesson plan or supervision plan and assessment instrument for the teaching or supervision practice the TA is responsible for;
  • Identify and adjust their teaching or supervision practice to cultural differences between students;
  • Formulate their own learning objectives regarding teaching in tutorials and reflect on their performance in practice accordingly.
