Publishing in English

Course description

"Extremely useful to be aware of the small details that can make your paper better" course participant, November 2012

This course will help students improve their academic writing. We will cover how to get started, structure and organization of a publication, how to write well-developed paragraphs and link sentences together, as well as fine points such as punctuation. The student should come prepared with a writing project, such as a research publication or review, to work on during the course, thus this course is ideal for a student beginning to write a first publication. During the course, the student will submit five to six pieces of writing of about 750 words as homework, and will receive detailed individual comments and advice. The course is quite intensive (six four-hour lectures and a one-half hour private conference to discuss the writing project). Due to the structure of the course, students can only participate in this course if they are able to attend 5 out of the 6 meetings. Please contact the Graduate School Office immediately if you have a conflict.

Important note:

  • no basic grammar will be covered in class.
  • students should already have a (proven) high intermediate level of ability in writing English (CEFR B2+). PhD students who have not yet the required level of English are strongly adviced to register for English Writing course for PhD students first.

In order to establish whether an applicant meets the required level of English, he/she may be asked to take a pretest. This test will take an hour during which an essay of 500 words needs to be written (on PC). Based on the results, experts from the Language Center subsequently determine whether the applicant can be admitted to the course or not*. A possible pretest does not apply to English natives, or anyone who has obtained a Masters degree in an English language programme.
